The 2012-2013 Renovation Project
From November 2012 through July 2013, the Flaherty Pool underwent a multi-million dollar renovation project, inside
and out. The images below document the project as it progressed in last to first order. It also documents how
users were given access to alternate swim locations so no one would be seriously inconvenienced.

Updated: October 19, 2012
We have received communication from Mr. Noah Stockman, director of budget and finance for the Boston Centers for Youth and Families (BCYF) department at the City of Boston. The following update regards the closure of the Flaherty Pool for its multi-million dollar renovation.
From Mr. Stockman…

“As discussed, we are now pretty firm on our BCYF Flaherty Pool capital project timeline. Also, we are happy to report that we have made arrangements for the pool at the West Roxbury Ed Complex on VFW Parkway to host the swimmers and swim teams from the BCYF Flaherty during this construction project.
Additionally, after further consideration and feedback from the community we have been able to incorporate many of the suggestions we received at the community meeting and subsequent emails. One major change is that we have been able to delay the BCYF Draper Pool project so that it will remain open during construction of the BCYF Flaherty [Pool]. This will insure that Flaherty users have some options that hopefully meet their needs during the project.
We have placed a notice of the project at the BCYF Flaherty Pool as well as an email sign-up sheet for those members that wish to receive periodic updates on the status of the project. The sign-up sheet (**) can be found at the front desk of the pool.
We are finalizing the West Roxbury Ed Complex pool schedule and I will send that as soon as it becomes available. I also have attached some relevant info to this email. Please feel free to share with the [Flaherty Pool] committee members. (++)
Let me know if you have any questions otherwise I will be in touch.”
BCYF website at: http://www.CityofBoston.gov/BCYF
** Alternately e-mail your request for info to: [email protected]
++ The attachments consisted of the notice currently posted on the Flaherty Pool front entrance and available at the reception desk for hand out, and a press release issued back on October 8 which has already appeared in local newspapers and blogs.

In summary:
Closure Date:
The last day of operation for the BCYF Flaherty Swimming Pool will be Saturday, November 17, 2012. The building will close and lock at the end of operations that day.
Please see special schedule note for the Flaherty Dolphins Swim Team below! This impacts the actual closure date for a number of people! For many the last date will be Friday, November 16, 2012.
New Temporary Location:
The Flaherty Pool operation, staff, and programming, will relocate during the renovation to the West Roxbury High School Complex located at 1205 VFW Parkway, West Roxbury, MA. 02132. The relocated staff and programming will re-open the on Monday, November 19, 2012, at the new location.
Public Transit Options... See below.
Hours of Operation:
Richard Mojica the Flaherty Pool manager is still working on a schedule at the high school as of this writing (**). However, we do know that arrangements have been made to get the high school building opened early, possibly as early as 5:30 AM, in order to accommodate morning lap swimmers. In order for this to happen, BCYF had to arrange to reimburse the school department additional hours for a custodian to open the building early for pool users. This was in negotiation and no earlier information could be made available until this part was resolved.
** When the new schedule becomes available it will be posted on the schedule page **
The morning schedule which most people are familiar with should remain generally intact. The late morning and early afternoon hours will be used by the high school for its programming. Flaherty’s hours and programming will resume late afternoon through the evening till or near 9 PM.
Telephone & E-Mail:
As a part of the relocation, the Flaherty Pool’s telephone number, 617-635-5181 is expected to be transferred to the high school pool so the staff can be reached there for information. We do not have information on the fax line at this time. Richard will still be accessible via his City of Boston e-mail: [email protected] as well as via the Flaherty Dolphin’s E-mail address at: [email protected] which is accessed by Richard (Manager & Swim team Coach), Louis (Asst. Manager), and Mamanesha (Sr. Lifeguard).
Flaherty Dolphin Swim Team:
Specific information for the swim team is being dispatched through the parent’s internal network. The Flaherty Dolphin’s Metro League competitions will continue at the Flaherty Pool up through November. Their second and last swim meet atthe pool is scheduled for the afternoon of November 17. As such, the last effective full day for the public will be Friday, November 16. At 12 noon on Saturday the 17th, the pool will be reserved for the Flaherty Dolphins Swim Team and their competition with the swimmers from the Wayside Pool as has been customary.
Flaherty Dolphins Swim Team Competitions will transfer to the West Roxbury High School Complex starting December 1.
Metro League Swim Schedule:
Richard Mojica has released the Metro Swim League schedule for competitions and asked us to display that on the pool’s web pages. You may now reference that there. Please see: http://www.roslindalecc.org and link through to the Flaherty Pool. The direct URL is: http://flahertypool.weebly.com Then click on the 2012-2013 Swim Meet Schedule from the left side navigation bar.
Draper Pool:
The closure Date of the Draper Pool will be pushed back in order to accommodate the region’s swimmers better. It is expected to remain open until the Flaherty's renovations are completed. Additional information on that is pending.
Alternate Locations:
Your membership card in the Flaherty Pool will be honored at other BCYF swimming pools in Boston. A list of those is available on line and has already been previously distributed. See BCYF website URL above.
Direct Access:
BCYF is planning to establish an e-mail contact list for Flaherty Pool swimmers to sign up with, and receive progress notifications as they become available. That sign-up list is available at the Flaherty Pool reception desk. If you wish to be on direct distribution you can sign up there. Alternately e-mail your request for updates to: [email protected]
Anyone seeking to get distributions from the non-profit community-based council that provides fiduciary oversight to the pool (this newsletter), and the Flaherty Pool Committee, may contact us at: [email protected] Feel free to share this address with others.
Why was the pool’s closure delayed from September?
Simply put, design modifications. Some of the changes sought through the June 11 public meeting and subsequent e-mails were included and additional technical also required blue print revisions. This precipitated the need to ask construction companies to re-quote the job. This is a process that is outlined in city regulations to assure appropriate access, and as a result pushed back the closure date.
How long will the pool be closed?
The specific time frame has not been quoted. We have been told to expect a 1-year closure. If the construction can come in under that, so much the better. A brief list of the major upgrades are available at: http://flahertypool.weebly.com.
Adult Dolphins?
A prior communication in distribution from elsewhere suggested there was an adult division of the Flaherty Dolphins Swim team. According to parent organizers of the team, the team’s cut off age is 18-19 years. There is another adult group that meets at the Flaherty Pool and competes with others but they are not associated with the Dolphins. Richard Mojica, pool manager and the swim team’s coach confirms this is a misunderstanding.
Next Communication:
As soon as we have something it will be dispatched. For now, please enjoy the pool till mid-November.
Thanks to all for your input.

West Roxbury High School Complex
The high school is best reached by automobile. For public transit take the MBTA #36 bus to the West Roxbury Veteran’s Hospital in West Roxbury and walk the remaining distance (about 15 mins). Select runs will stop at VFW Parkway and Charles Park Rd. (This is closer – ask the driver if he stops there. The Rivermoor Industrial Park runs will stop there).
Then proceed north (inbound) on VFW Parkway passed the Home Depot, and cross under the MBTA Railroad bridge to the high school driveway. Please be careful crossing VFW Parkway. Please use the pedestrian signals at Charles Park Rd. at the Roche Family Skating Rink for better visibility. (Map (c) Google Maps)
